Stephen Mulliner moved with his family from London to Haslemere 29 years ago. He trained and practised briefly as a barrister before embarking on a career in banking and financial services. He also spent 18 years as non-executive chairman of a listed property company which specialised in commercial and residential development and investment.
Stephen retired in 2007 and has since enjoyed increasing his contribution to local public life. He spent eight years as chairman of governors of Barrow Hills School before retiring in 2013 and served as chairman of Haslewey from 2012 to 2015.
Stephen joined Haslemere Town Council in 1999 and served for 16 years until 2015, serving as Town Mayor in 2002/03 and 2007/08. Having previously been one of the army of Haslemere commuters, his time on the Council and as Mayor made him aware of the extraordinary extent and importance of the voluntary sector in the town. He is a strong proponent of localism and serves on the Steering Group of Haslemere Vision which is a body working with the Town Council to produce the Haslemere Neighbourhood Plan.
Stephen was elected to Waverley Borough Council in 2007. He has a strong interest in planning and serves on both the Southern Area Planning Committee and the Joint Planning Committee. He also served on the Audit Committee from 2008 to 20013 and chaired it from 2009 to 2012.
He is married with four grown-up children and two grandchildren. His principal recreation is tournament croquet with golf a close second.
